The defining characteristic of a corrosive material is its ability to cause severe damage to living tissue. Corrosive substances can attack and destroy organic tissues upon contact, leading to burns or other serious injuries. This property is critical for responders to understand, as it directly impacts how they approach an incident involving such materials.

Corrosives can also harm metals and other materials, which is why they are classified as hazardous. Understanding this attribute is essential for developing safe handling procedures and effective response strategies in hazardous material situations.

Other characteristics, such as being highly flammable, producing noxious fumes, or being explosive under pressure, describe different types of hazards and do not apply to the definition of corrosive materials. Thus, the emphasis on their capability to damage living tissue is what sets corrosive materials apart in hazardous materials training and response protocols.
